Fate of a Rose (16)
Fate of a Rose (16) : Tenth leaf

Tenth leaf

Yuu-chan  2025.04.02. 02:14

“You will immediately board on it, Lu Feng.”

Lu Feng hummed at the General’s harsh voice. His superior was an older man, and seemed angry and impatient. He ordered him to get on a plane that he sent especially for him just a minute ago.

The rose stood at a window in a building, not far from the edge of District 8. There were not many tall buildings around, mostly offices, but he saw a part of a huge dome lay on the ground in the centre of the district; so wide, he couldn’t even see the other side, and it was just as short too. It almost looked like a gigantic concrete cockroach, leaning above the ground.

It was the main shelter. It led underground, and at the entrance, there was still a small line of people going in, surrounded by military armored vehicles. Soldiers urged the civilians to hurry, but there were many slow and small figures – elderly and young people.

On the opposite side, around a freshly pulled-up isolation wall, he noticed the tiny figure who waited for him earlier.

The Arbiter didn’t question him just yet. He ensured that Lu Feng made it inside a safe building, and he had to go immediately to take care of his people and command other teams.

Lu Feng barely could hear what was the General talking about, and just mindlessly agreed on everything with a hum before ending the call.

He didn’t want to go to the Main City. He didn’t even want to come here in the first place. As soon as the Arbiter was with him, he was ready to go back, and help those soldiers at the gates, who helped him. He didn’t feel confusion or shock over this: his ancestor was a righteous and courageous man, even if he wasn’t the epitome of excitement and enthusiasm. And the rose felt that he would disappoint Lu Feng if he would hide in the Main City. He wanted to live up to his fame, not because he wanted to blend into society or avoid being exposed – it was because he knew he had the power to help. This human was capable of winning his fights, why should the rose waste his talent for hiding or fleeing?

And… maybe there was another reason.

Looking at that tiny figure, he felt his heart pulling towards him. Whenever his gaze fell on that person, it started beating faster, and he just wanted to go. He knew that the Arbiter was busy, and realistically, even if both of them would return to the gates, they would lead different teams…

But he couldn’t and didn’t want to resist. Just like that night in the Twin Towers, he gave into his instinct. His ancestor probably would do this too. If the original Lu Feng had been there, he would not have accepted the judgment of calling him out of the battlefield.

Soon enough, he reached the small group of Judges at the isolation wall, who were about to board an armored vehicle. The Arbiter stood right at the driver cabin’s door, showing his back to him, but he noticed Lu Feng’s firm footsteps, and turned around.

Before he could say anything, Lu Feng spoke.

“I’m going with you.” He said calmly.

The Arbiter’s calm face didn’t change, but there was a moment of silence after Lu Feng’s statement. The strong streetlights made the pale skin glow.

   “You’ve received another order, Lieutenant…”

“If I join the Trial Court, I will be your subordinate. If I were your subordinate, would you still want to send me back?”

The young man probably didn’t expect this question, and seemed like he earnestly pondered about it for a little while, his eyes wandering away somewhere behind Lu Feng.

“You are a good fighter…” He started slowly. “I… I would trust your abilities. But you’re not my subordinate yet, and I’ve also received the same order as you: to make sure, you will return to the Main City tonight. I don’t have any good reasons to keep you with me in this situation. If the situation would be like catching an intruder or an interrogation, I would take you with me against the order, but we are in a battle…”

“They can’t do anything about it at the moment. Just let me join. I will deal with the General later.”

The Arbiter looked into the armored vehicle, and Lu Feng noticed that his adjutant was listening until now. When their eyes met, the Judge looked slightly surprised, but then he nodded to his boss. It seemed like they made nonverbal communication. How well did this person know the Arbiter, if he didn’t need a word to understand him?

Lu Feng unexpectedly felt envious. He wished he could understand people this easily.

The Arbiter slammed the car’s door when his communicator rang.

“Colonel An!” An out-of-breath voice screamed into the communicator on the opposite side. “They took off. The bugs… suddenly, they took off, and started gathering in the sky. I think… I think they are going to District 8 now! We tried to kill as many as we could, but there is still a lot… how is the evacuation going?”

It turned out the evacuation ended, and there was time for the soldiers to take down the remaining insects.

The Arbiter promised that they don’t have to worry, and their side will take care of the rest. He kindly thanked the soldiers for buying them time, and he assured them that they don’t have to chase the insects. He told them, the fight was going to take place in the buffer zone. The soldier’s voice trembled in relief, before cutting the call. The Arbiter immediately gave the sign of departing.

The cars rushed past the Arbiter and Lu Feng. The wind of the behemoths’ movements made the small figure staggered, and if Lu Feng wasn’t standing right next to him, he might have fallen backwards. The young man cast a look at him, but the armored vehicles made so much rumbling noise, there was no point in explaining, why they were left behind.

Just when the troops were already out of the isolation wall’s entrance, the Arbiter spoke.

“I actually have a different plan. I noticed something, and I wanted to see if I was right. Maybe I’m wrong, but if I am, we can still catch up with the army later. Come with me.”

Lu Feng obediently stuck to the young man, who changed his usually slow pace with a steady, quick strode, and fished them a car – it was a different one that Lu Feng used.

The place was quite eerie. The lit-up streets were completely empty and dark, the windows all lifeless eyes, and only the wind howled relentlessly between the houses. They could also hear the roaring of the convoy that headed towards the gates. The noises gradually began fading, and when they got into the car, they vanished completely. The Arbiter started driving in another direction.

The silence was a bit odd after so many noises tonight. The Arbiter put both of his hands on the wheel, completely stretching them out, focusing on the road. They went through many streets before they exited from a different entrance. The isolation wall circled the whole district.

Once in the buffer zone, going to somewhere on the east side of the Outer City, Lu Feng heard the calm voice again.

“How was your experience in the City Defence Agency?” He asked casually, not looking at him. “How did you feel seeing your office again?”

Lu Feng stayed silent for a moment. He remembered; the Arbiter mentioned that Lu Feng hadn’t come to that place a few years ago. All of a sudden, he started connecting some dots again. Lu Feng’s brain was also impeccable, after all.

The office was not really Lu Feng’s, but Lieutenant Gao’s. A few years ago, something had happened, that Lu Feng wanted to write inside his notebook, but ended up not doing so. Then, he remembered the rumour that Dr Ji told him about.

Feeling he was going in the right direction, he suspected that the Arbiter wanted him to see that office because it belonged to someone whom he lost.

“Oh. You were testing me with that too.”

The Arbiter’s unchanging face showed a small smile under the faint light, which enveloped them from above on this large, plain land. Lu Feng still had to narrow his eyes to see.

“Sorry. I thought you are avoiding that place deliberately. I also thought you would be angry about the notebooks. But you didn’t react much.”

Lu Feng slightly flinched. The notebooks… he could only talk about one thing. A certain notebook was still inside his pocket. For that thought, he reached for it, and pulled it out. The Arbiter flashed a glance towards it, and his small smile vanished.

Thinking of it… Lu Feng wasn’t in the Outer City for a few years, but his latest notebooks were still there. Even Lu Feng was surprised: Dr Ji told him, he usually got rid of every personal belongings of his. This fit Lu Feng’s personality much more than the office full of memories and mementoes in the City Defence Agency’s office.

“You kept them.” Lu Feng concluded. The Arbiter hesitated before quietly humming as an answer. “After I trashed them… Why? And how did you get them?”

“I asked an acquaintance of mine to keep an eye on them. When you finished one, he told me, or got it for me, when he went to take out the garbage. And... because this was the only way I felt I can know more about you.”

It was really not Lu Feng, who meticulously put all the notes on the shelf, but the Arbiter himself. Lu Feng stroked the black cover, before searching for a particular page. When he found the only date, which was followed by nothing else but a dot, he looked at it deeply.

That was probably Gao Tang’s death.

“So, me not reacting, increased your suspicion about me?” Lu Feng asked calmly, not looking away.

“Well… somewhat. And your driving skills too. We didn’t find any brain injury that would explain such a long period of amnesia about certain things. But anyway, you still have your thirty-day trial period to prove yourself. And we are here.”

They arrived at District 6. Many tall buildings welcomed them, but the streets were as empty as in the other part of the city. When the car stopped, the Arbiter got out, and Lu Feng followed him. Going around the vehicle, he stood beside the young man, who just… leaned against the car with his waist and back. He leisurely tangled his fingers together, and hung his arms in front of him.

“Are we waiting for something?” Lu Feng asked, unsure of what they were doing at this place. It was even windier than the other district, with the many buildings creating small alleys for the blast.

The Arbiter hummed, and his eyes seemed to fixate on something. Lu Feng followed his gaze, and saw the buffer zone, from where they just come a moment ago.

He saw the flickering lights in the distance.

The army probably clashed with the bug swarms. Their sound was not audible from this far, but their explosions and newly lit searchlights beaming into the sky were quite clear. Everything seemed small, like when they were on TV.

“There were no problems with the ultrasonic dispensers.” The Arbiter suddenly spoke up. Lu Feng cut his gaze from the scene. The light-coloured eyes were looking right into his soul. “It was perhaps just a coincidence, that the communication with District 1 and 5 was cut. The dispensers are working well, yet… the insects suddenly started marching into the city. It is unheard of. Not long ago, we increased the protection around the Outer City, and raised the levels of the ultrasonic dispensers as well, for the early breeding season.”

     Lu Feng knew this.

“I heard about it from the news.” He admitted with a nod. The Arbiter acknowledged his answer by returning the nod. When he lowered his head, the brim of his military hat cast a darker shadow on his face now.

“So, I was thinking, what could be the reason, that they were attacking us right now, as if the dispensers stopped working.” He continued. “I thought, something else must have attracted them to here. But I couldn’t figure it out.”

Lu Feng wasn’t sure, what the Arbiter meant by this. However, instead of explaining it further, the Arbiter suddenly changed the topic.

“I wanted to talk about your mother. Originally… this was the reason I brought you with me. It wasn’t a complete lie. I was inspecting you, but I also wanted to tell you.”

The rose almost forgot about it. The unexpected visit of his pollinators erased those memories temporarily.

“As I said…” The Arbiter turned away again, watching the flashing light in the distance. “I don’t like accusing people without concrete proof. And no matter how much my subordinates and Colonel Howard’s people tried to find anything, they couldn’t. So take this as only a suspicion.” Lu Feng hummed again, but the Arbiter still paused briefly before he would continue. “I have a suspicion, that your mother incited the civilians for the demonstrations. Some Judges say, they think she also gave money to them, and fed them with such misinformation that… that I’m a xenogenic, who wants to kill everyone, or that I lost my mind… well, there are actually multiple versions. But the point is the same. But whenever we found some traces, somehow we would lose it, again and again, and they’ve never done anything physical to oppose me.”

Lu Feng was slightly shocked. Given his mother’s hate, it wasn’t surprising, that she would do this, but at the same time… she was so loving towards the flowers and Lu Feng.

   “Why?” He asked earnestly.

The Arbiter once again lowered his head, and slowly pulled his arms up, crossing them in front of his chest. One of his hands reached for his collar, almost unconsciously, and grabbed something there. Lu Feng understood immediately, that it was the medallion. He inadvertently copied those movements, grabbing his own bulletcase.

The Arbiter noticed it, and glanced at Lu Feng’s hand on his collarbone. His eyelashes fluttered when he cast a look at him again.

“Previously Dr Ji assured me, that you’ve never kept any personal items on you.” He whispered. “Yet, you said… that is a memento. For what exactly?”

Lu Feng’s lips went a bit dry. From all the questions he could ask…

   “For a person, who died.”

“Was it someone important to you?”

“It was a friend.” He said the same thing to Vance, and he meant it. Well, it was a half-lie. There wasn’t any friendliness between him and Lu Feng. If his ancestor were alive, and came to this scene… perhaps, he would shoot a cold look at him for calling him a friend. He spared a xenogenic’s life only because he would gain nothing by killing a wretched rose, but if he was in a better shape… “I admire him very much. He is the reason I’m alive.”

   “Hm… Did you love him?”

Vance asked this one as well. Lu Feng looked at the tiny figure under the sharp lights and deep shadows.

“Not like a partner… but… like a brother… I guess.” This would definitely anger Lu Feng if he were here.

If anything, the rose could understand family bonds. He had siblings, younglings, and elderly roses, they were born, they lived, and they withered with time, growing on the same bush. He already understood the love for them, and the love between mother and children in the human world. Even if Madam Lu wasn’t the best example, her love towards her roses, and – undeniably – for Lu Feng, was strong and unbreakable.

When the Arbiter didn’t answer, Lu Feng wanted to ask if this was relieving to him. Vance was relieved when he heard that Lu Feng didn’t have ‘anyone in his heart’. Was the Arbiter trying to find out this part too? But Vance asked this because he wanted to mate with Lu Feng, therefore, the Arbiter probably asked it for something else…

When he opened his mouth to find out the reason, suddenly, an unexpected ringtone pierced into the windy street’s silence. The noise vaguely echoed between the tall buildings.

“Colonel An, the swarms… We killed most of the flying classes, but the earthbound ones… we couldn’t stop them, they are almost at District 8.”

“Have they not changed course since then?” The Arbiter asked calmly. The residents were all safe in the shelters, so he didn’t react much.

“We are following them, but so far…” The man on the other side quieted when someone else started shouting in the background, but the person was too far from the speaker, and they didn’t hear the words. A lot of noises could be heard, which made it harder to take out what he said. “Colonel An… you were right… They don’t seem to go for the shelter! They stopped around the edges of the district...! They are starting to change course!”

   “Towards…?”

“It seems like… well, District 6.”

“You don’t have to chase them. But it would be better if you would go to District 7 or 2.”

   “To Distr… Colonel…?”

“Just do that. I’ll hang up now. Hurry.”

Lu Feng silently watched how the Arbiter ended the call, but instead of explaining his thoughts, he started dialling again. The noises from afar seemed to get closer, and Lu Feng looked up, trying to observe the plain field. Because of the darkness, the bugs weren’t visible just yet, but they still saw some red or orange flashes from the guns.

   “General Zhang, I…”

“WHY IS LIEUTENANT LU STILL WITH YOU?! I told you to put him on the plane as soon as possible! Doctor, don’t test my patience!”

“Please, General, this is not important now…” This was a shocking statement, that made everyone who heard it freeze. Not only because of the content – a Colonel ignores the General’s order and even talks back – but because they’ve never heard him talking in an elevated tone, almost angrily. But the courageous Colonel An didn’t stop there. “General, I need you to send a fighter plane towards District 6, and bomb it.”

Lu Feng’s heart skipped a beat. He didn’t know much about human weaponry, not to the extent of their absolute offensive power, but even he knew, that a “bomb” would mean great destruction. The General almost didn’t have a word, they only heard his uneven breathing.

The rose looked at the calm, pale face. The Arbiter once again lowered his head, and he couldn’t see his light eyes very well from the hat’s brim. This time, the posture seemed intentional.

“How dare… you… Where… where are you, actually? I heard from Captain Xiu, that you didn’t go with them to fight, but took Lu Feng somewhere… are you telling me…”

“General, the bug swarms are following a certain path, and nothing can stop them. It seems that we’re just chasing them around the base, while they are going wherever they want… I figured out their next destination… no, I lured them out of the range of District 8, so the civilians should be fine in the shelters, even if you bomb this district. I’m willing to die to protect them. Please, hurry up. The swarms are already changing their direction, they will be here soon.”

“… Doctor, you’ve definitely lost your damn mind! I’m not going to…”

“I know what path they are following, and I can assure you, if we don’t stop them here, they will eventually be heading for the Main City.” The Arbiter interrupted, and as he finished, he looked up at Lu Feng. It was just one moment, while their eyes met before he turned away.

Then, he hung up. He just hung up in the middle of the General’s another round of yelling, and the howling silence returned to the windy streets. It was only them again. From somewhere far away, strange smells were creeping towards them – it was a burnt and iron-like smell as if the gunpowder’s odour mixed with blood. It had an indescribable aftertaste as well. Thankfully, it was pretty vague, so they still could breathe well.

After a while without speaking, Lu Feng cleared his throat.

“Are you certain that he will send that bomb?”

“… I hope so. He might be angry with me now, but it’s more than just one person’s problem.” The Arbiter replied in a low voice, then he reluctantly added. “Are you angry with me?”

Lu Feng thought about it. He wasn’t sure, why the young man chose this way, why now, and why didn’t he tell Lu Feng beforehand…

“Not really. I’m willing to die with you if that means, everyone else would be spared.”

His ancestor would say the same thing, and the rose was honest too. It was just a bit hurtful. He wanted to live. He wanted to bring the seeds to the wilderness, and build a new family to keep his species alive. But he already made his decision when he turned his back to the gates. There was no point in dwelling on that – he could’ve died at the gates with the soldiers, he could’ve been discovered, he could’ve died while driving, he could’ve stayed at District 8, and died when the bugs arrived, and now, he will die here from a bomb, playing decoy for other humans’ sake.

The Arbiter lifted his head, and stared a hole into his soul. His face was just as calm as always, but his light eyes grew a thin layer of… something. Maybe sadness? Or acceptance? Or happiness? That would make no sense, right? Even the small smile came back to his lips.

   “Well, maybe I was wrong…”

A brief silence descended upon them one more time. Lu Feng leaned against the car right beside him, and looked up. He still couldn’t see anything in the distance, but he didn’t really try to see it. In his head, thoughts were flowing higgledy-piggledy, about various things.

“This was my first date.” He said after a while.

“Oh… hm… it makes sense. It was my first date too.”

“I liked it.” He added, and let himself smile… at least, he tried, but it certainly didn’t look nice on him.

“…We were attacked in the middle of our date though.” It sounded as if the Arbiter suppressed his chuckle. “And you fought for your life… and now, we’re going to die.”

   “Hm.”

“It could be a slightly better date…”

   “How?”

“Well, normal people would spend a dinner together…” He probably remembered, that they had something like that already. “And then… well, depends. Normal people kiss after a date, sometimes.”

For the word ‘kiss’, an image of Vance flared up in Lu Feng’s mind, leaning closer to him. As if his mind tried to tell him something, a suspicious feeling rose in his heart. He frowned.

“Kiss… Every date leads to kissing?”

“I don’t know. Maybe not the first one, I guess.”

“Dating is… only for partners? For lovers?”

“Hmmm… It is for people, who want to form a romantic relationship.”

The epiphany Lu Feng experienced at this very moment was unforeseen, to say the least. A chilly feeling poured onto his face, and his stomach slightly jumped, instinctively looking at the young man. The Arbiter watched him like an interesting TV show, sparks of enjoyment lit up his light irises.

This was the point where Lu Feng realised, why Dr Ji freaked out so much over the text messages, and why the Arbiter had that subtle, strange expression when he first asked him out for dinner. Lu Feng unknowingly indicated to the Arbiter, that he had the intention of finding a mating partner in him!

He wanted to save face, but before he could come up with any excuses, both of their communicators started to ring, pulling them out of this leg-weakening, tingling atmosphere.

His communicator showed an unusual name on the screen: his mother. Lu Feng thought about it for a second, but he decided to ignore it. He didn’t know, what to say to that woman anymore, having his doubts over the suspicion that the Arbiter shared with him.

   “Yes? What it is, Seraing?”

“Colonel…” The adjutant’s voice briefly trembled, even though he forced himself to stay calm. “The army’s leaders… all got a call from the General… he said, he sent a bomb to District 8 a half minute ago.”

The light smile melted down from the Arbiter’s face, and became deathly pale just under a snap of a second.

“Colonel, what should we do? We’re still here… and… and the civilians… all the people from the Outer City…”

The atmosphere changed rapidly, and the cold bit into Lu Feng. His head slightly ached, and he didn’t understand this twist. The General ignored everything the Arbiter said to him?!

“Seraing…” The usually calm voice was now also shaking, and Lu Feng saw the Arbiter’s knuckles going white, as he grasped his communicator so tightly that it almost broke. “I… I’m sorry. If that’s true, then there is not much time left. I suppose you don’t have much space either… For all of the teams you have there: take the young and strong civilians into your cars, and go to District 5 immediately.”

There was a moment of silence.

“What… what age limits do I have to look for?”

“Six to thirty. The capable ones… those, who can wield a weapon or do hard work.”

“But…” The adjutant’s voice broke. “Roger, Doctor. We will head to the City Defence Agency then…”

   “Good. Let’s meet up there.”

The Arbiter put away his communicator, and pushed himself away from the car, but he stopped, and stared forward as if he were seeing something. They were still alone under the white streetlights, which now made Lu Feng somewhat dizzy. Following the Arbiter’s gaze, he saw nothing.

“An Zhe?” He asked quietly, not knowing, what he should say or do.

“I guess, this is not the end yet…” His voice couldn’t regain his calm. Now, it was shaking even more, abruptly getting a higher pitch. Right after he spoke, Lu Feng noticed that the tiny figure shook too. “Let’s go to District…”

When he took a step forward… only for a snap of a second, he paused, and then he suddenly collapsed. If Lu Feng didn’t have good enough reflexes, or wasn’t trying to get close to him anyway, the young man would fall to the ground, and maybe even injure himself.

   “An Zhe. An Zhe…!”

The Arbiter didn’t reply. Lu Feng squatted on the ground, keeping the small body in his arms, and turning his chin with one hand. The head weakly tipped aside, and landed on his chest lifelessly. His long, black lashes covered his eyes tightly, and his face was even paler than ever. The hat had fallen off when he collapsed, and under it, a fine layer of cold sweat beaded his forehead, and some of his strands stuck to the moist temples.

He looked so fragile, and was so light as if he was about to break into pieces. Every part of Lu Feng’s body cramped into a solid lump. He patted the chilly cheeks gently, but the Arbiter didn’t wake up.

Panic started rising in him, and he instinctively pulled the small person closer. Lu Feng was strong enough to lift him up, and put him in the car, and finally, his fingers began trembling too.

He had to think about what to do, and keep pushing Lu Feng’s calmness on himself. He closed his eyes, both hands pressing on the top of the car above the door, and took some deeper breaths. His ears rang slightly. After a few seconds of thinking, he took out the Arbiter’s communicator, and dialled the number that said ‘Seraing’.

It took a few notes for the other man to pick it up, and before he could even greet Lu Feng, he said:

“Colonel An had fainted. What should I do to ensure his safety?”

“…What ha…?” Seraing’s voice faded because, in the background, many things happened. It seemed like people were crying, and someone was shouting at them for it. “Ah, well… check his pulse first. Better to check it on his neck.”

Lu Feng bent into the car, putting two of his icy fingers on the side of the Arbiter’s neck. At first, he didn’t feel anything, but then a faint pulsation radiated into his fingertips.

   “It’s weak… But seems normal.”

“Thank God… If it’s normal, just put him to rest. Take him to the City Defence Agency. I will send a medic there in advance. We’re still… we’re in District 8. Oh, Lieutenant… If Colonel An wakes up, do you have water or sugary water on you?”

“Just plain water.” He saw one bottle in the car.

“Give it to him then. Let’s meet up in District 5.”

“Understood. Thank you. Let’s meet up there.”

There was nothing he could do. After the conversation ended, he quickly rearranged the situation: he gently pushed the Arbiter to the side where usually he was sitting, and got into the driver’s seat this time. For a last second, he looked at the limp figure. The Arbiter’s head tilted to his shoulder and the window. Lu Feng carefully touched the sweaty forehead. It was cold, but not dead-cold. Probably the strong wind caused the sweaty skin to cool down so much. His breathing seemed small, but even. If there was going to be a doctor in the office, he could get better.

Thanks to the Arbiter’s help earlier, Lu Feng knew how to drive now. His only shortcoming was his sense of direction, which made him pause for several moments. When he finally decided about the route he wanted to take, and start the engine, a loud roar shook the sky. It came gradually, but rapidly, and went away just as fast. Lu Feng looked out of the windscreen, and only saw a shadow, rushing towards District 8 on the sky. The aurora wasn’t strong enough to draw sharp outlines for it, and the streetlamps made Lu Feng see much less… yet, this time, even he got the cold sweat on his back.

He didn’t have time to waste. Stepping on the gas hard, he turned the wheel like crazy, and the car flew through the long street.

They weren’t too far when a flashing, blinding white light came from behind. It was so strong as if the sun suddenly descended over the ground in the Outer City. The buildings running on the side of the streets almost lost all colours, and he only could see the silhouette of the road. Lu Feng made a mistake looking into the rearview mirror. He only saw a beam of light, cutting into his retinas.

He pushed that small pedal with all of his might to go faster, and it was probably a dangerous move, but nothing frightened him more in his entire life than the light behind them. As he was able to escape a bit further, the low parts of the buildings started covering up the light, giving him some support on where to go, but the top parts were completely flooded in white.

He almost reached the district’s other side, and was about to exit to the next buffer zone when the ground and the car began vibrating. He saw the wind’s abruptly changing direction; the airwaves carried various things with them, pushing them as if the half-boards or trash pieces were pulled with a string towards something.

The sound came at last. A frightening, ear-piercing, mind-shattering rumbling as if the Moon itself came crashing into the ground. The crunching sound made the vibrations even worse. Lu Feng got dizzy, clenching his fist on the wheel, and trying to see the road, but he also almost fainted, feeling a burning sensation in his chest. The bomb has landed, and Lu Feng had no idea, if anyone was able to leave District 8 before it did.
